Mumbai: The Reserve Bank announced in May to withdraw Rs 2000 notes from circulation and asked citizens to exchange it with banks till the month of September. So 30 days are still left if you have Rs 2000 notes lying with you. Housewives in every household have a hidden wallet or box, so there is a possibility of accidentally keeping a note in the hidden wallet. During demonetisation, 500 or 1000 rupees notes, which women had accumulated in their homes in difficulty, suddenly came to the fore. Those who have Rs 2000 note can go to any bank branch and exchange it. After the announcement made by the RBI, citizens can deposit 2000 notes in the bank or exchange 2000 notes in the bank. RBI has clearly said in its order that as long as these notes are in circulation, citizens can transact using Rs 2000 notes. In an appeal to the general public, RBI said that they now have one month left to deposit or exchange Rs 2000 notes. To avoid last-minute rush, RBI has urged people to deposit or exchange notes before September 30, 2023.
2000 note came into circulation after 2016 demonetisation
Notably, on 8 November 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced demonetisation at 8 pm, at which time it was decided to withdraw Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes from circulation. In fact, in the same year new notes of Rs 2000 were issued under Section 24(1) of the RBI Act, 1934. The Reserve Bank of India has announced that it will withdraw the Rs. 2000 currency note from circulation. After that, two thousand rupee notes have started to be exchanged from banks. 30 September 2023 is the last date to exchange the notes. The central government has clarified its stand on this while the discussion on extending this deadline is going on. The Ministry of Finance has clarified that there is no proposal to extend the deadline for the process of exchange of two thousand rupees. But you can only deposit 2000 notes in the post office. But for this it is necessary to have KYC of account holders. But you cannot exchange 2000 notes at the post office.
