Mumbai. Good news for vegetarians as well as for non-vegetarians as the prices of both the meal plates have come down. There has been a big fall in the price of tomatoes in September making vegetarian meal plates cheaper by 17 percent. The prices of non-vegetarian foods have also reduced which has given relief to foodies. There was a sharp rise in the average price of a plate of food in the months of August and July. The biggest reason behind it is the increase in the price of tomatoes. However, it has been observed that the average price of a plate of food has decreased by 17 percent in the month of September. This has been revealed in CRISIL's monthly Food Plate Cost Indicator. In the month of September, the price of onion came down significantly by 12 percent. It is estimated that these rates will increase further in the coming months. Kharif 2023 crop production is down and therefore, onion prices may remain high. Non-vegetarian platters have declined by 9 percent in the month of September. Because broiler chicken prices have increased by 2 to 3 percent compared to last month.
Reduction in fuel prices
Fuel prices, which accounted for 14 percent of vegetarian meals and 8 percent of non-vegetarian meals, fell by 18 per cent in September. In September, the price of an LPG cylinder came down from Rs 1103 to Rs 903, reflecting its effect on the price of a plate of food. Green chilli prices have also dropped by 31 per cent this month, that helped to make the plate of food cheaper. Based on food prices across all regions of the country, CRISIL calculates the average price of a plate in a household. It makes it easy to track people's food expenses. Cereals, pulses, vegetables, spices, edible oil, broiler chicken and cooking gas are witnessing a reduction in thali prices.
Tomato price playing major role
CRISIL Market Intelligence and Analytics' monthly index of food plate costs has shown a decline in prices of vegetarian and non-vegetarian platters in September. Tomato prices fell by 62 percent in September that were priced at Rs 39 per kg. The same tomato price was Rs 102 per kg in August. The main reason behind the fall in the prices of Veg-Non-Veg Thali is the fall in the price of tomatoes. According to the report, vegetarian thali prices fell by one per cent in September on year-on-year basis.
