Mumbai. Just as Israel has developed its air defense system Iron Dome to protect itself from the rockets of the neighboring enemy organization Hamas, India is also developing a similar system to deal with the challenges coming from neighboring enemy countries. This is a missile system that destroys rockets coming from the sky in the air itself. This will enable detection and destruction of enemy stealth fighters, aircraft, drones, cruise missiles and space-guided weapons at a distance of up to 350 km. Experts hope that they will be deployed in the country by 2028-29, so that air threats coming from neighboring enemy countries can be eliminated in the air. This system will be successful in its objective upto 80 to 90 percent. Currently, India has the Russian-made S-400 air defense system, but the Indian Iron Dome will be much better than that. The Cabinet Committee on Security has also given its approval to complete it on mission mode.
Focus on LRASM
Currently, India is emphasizing on making Long Range Surface to Air Missile (LRSAM). This missile system will be capable of striking from surface to air. It will be capable of shooting down enemy airplanes, fighter jets, rockets, helicopters or missiles at a range of 400 kilometers. The Defense Ministry has received a proposal to make a three-layer long-range surface-to-air missile and its clearance will also be received soon. After the success of this project worth about Rs 22000 crore, India will join those countries which have their own air security system. The best thing is that the air defense system being manufactured in India is being led by the Indian Air Force which is continuously engaged in the development of indigenous defense equipment and systems.
Three layered security system
The air defense system that India is currently developing will have three layers. The mobile LR-SAM with long-range surveillance and fire control radar will have different types of interceptor missiles designed to engage enemies at ranges of 150 km, 250 km and 350 km. Earlier, India has made a medium range air defense system with Israel whose range is 70 kilometers. This means that if the enemy's missile or fighter jet is within a radius of 70 kilometers, then India already has the capability to shoot it down in the air. India's air defense system will also be on the model of Russia or Israel at present, but some technical modifications can be made in it as per the need. At present, India has three squads of S-400 systems which have been deployed on the borders of China and Pakistan. India currently has medium-range surface-to-air missiles. China also has its own air defense system like S-400 like Russia, but it pales in comparison to Russia.
It will be expensive though
Defence experts have justified this decision and said that India also needs to develop such air defense systems at the moment because the attacks that can be done by drones have changed the entire way of fighting. However, it will be quite expensive and this will be its crucial point. India will have to think a lot about whether it wants to deploy defense systems on its borders or on its important bases and cities.
