Mumbai. A total of 13,530 cases of fraud have been reported in government and private banks in 2022-23. A fraud of Rs 30,252 crore has taken place through them. According to the RBI report, most of the cases have happened with digital payments (card and internet). According to the report, a total of 9,097 cases of fraud involving Rs 59,819 crore were reported in 2021-22. In 2020-21, 7,338 cases involving Rs 1.32 lakh crore were reported. In this, maximum fraud has been done with private banks, but government banks are ahead in terms of amount. It has been said in the report that private banks have reported more cases of fraud through card and internet, which are of very small amounts. Most of the cases of public sector banks are related to the loan portfolio. That's why their amount is more.
Lag between the date of fraud and its detection
The central bank said, historical analysis of frauds reported during 2021-22 and 2022-23 shows that there is a considerable time lag between the date of fraud and its detection. In 2021-22, 93.7 percent of the fraud cases were reported in 2022-23. In private banks, 8,932 cases involving Rs 8,727 crore have been reported. A total of 3,405 fraud cases involving Rs 21, 125 crore have been found in public sector banks. The remaining cases are with payments banks, foreign banks, small finance banks and financial institutions. Of the total frauds of Rs 30,252 crore, 95 per cent i.e. Rs 28,792 crore is related to loans. RBI has said that it will take more steps to investigate cases related to fraud.
