Mumbai. Top Indian businessman and Reliance Industries CEO Mukesh Ambani- the richest people in the world- is now preparing to take an even bigger decision. He is reportedly set to make a splash in the fast-growing online streaming service to challenge the monopoly of Netflix and Amazon Prime, which dominate online streaming. Ambani has hinted about Jio Cinema's premium content plan. He wants to increase his Jio's dominance on the OTT platform. Jio Cinema, headed by Mukesh Ambani's son Akash Ambani, has already added Warner Bros. and HBO exclusive shows to its library. JioCinema subscribers now have the option to watch many popular HBO shows.
What are the subscription plans ?
Mukesh Ambani's JioCinema's decision to venture into premium subscriptions is considered significant. At Rs 999, JioCinema is gearing up to directly challenge rivals like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar. Netflix does not offer an annual subscription option. This plan starts from Rs.149. At the same time, the annual subscription of Amazon Prime Video is Rs 1499 and the premium annual subscription of Disney + Hotstar is also Rs 1499. JioCinema's premium subscription also has other features. The facility to stream content to 4 devices simultaneously is available.
IPL helped JioCinema getting popular
Notably, JioCinema has somewhat succeeded in carving out its niche in online streaming in India by offering free live streaming of IPL 2023. The decision to take content from Warner Bros. and HBO onto its platform is clearly aimed at attracting consumers. Now in the coming months online streaming will witness intense competition. It remains to be seen how Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney Hotstar+ will face the challenge of Jio Cinema in the coming years. After Jio Cinemas live streaming this year's IPL tournament for free, Hotstar has also announced to stream the upcoming World Cup and Asia Cup for free. The Asia Cup will start in September and the ICC World Cup 2023 in October. Both these important competitions will be available to watch for free on Hotstar.
