Mumbai. The jump in tomato prices has completely spoiled the taste as well as the budget of the kitchen, especially for those who relish on vegitable mix foods. The veg thali has become costlier by 28 per cent in a month due to the exorbitant high price of tomatoes. According to the monthly indicator of food plate cost released by Crisil, the cost of a veg thali in India increased by 28 per cent in July as compared to June. Tomato inflation can be attributed to 25 percent of this. According to the reports, from Rs 33 per kg in June to Rs 110 per kg in July, tomato prices rose 233 per cent. This is the third time in a row that the prices of veg thali have increased sequentially (on a monthly basis). In 2023-24, it is the first time that the price of veg thali has increased on an annual basis. The cost of non-veg thali has also increased. Non-veg thali has become costlier by 11 per cent on a monthly basis.
Dearness everywhere
CRISIL calculates the average cost of preparing thali at home based on input prices prevailing in North, South, East and West India. The monthly change shows the effect on the expenditure of the common man. The data also reveals the ingredients that make up the price of a plate, including cereals, pulses, broilers, vegetables, spices, edible oil and cooking gas. The price of non-veg thali has increased, but its pace is slow. Because the price of broiler is likely to fall by 3-5 per cent in July. The cost of broiler is almost 50 per cent in non veg thali. Usually a veg thali includes dal, roti, vegetables (onion, tomato and potato), curd and salad. In the report, chicken has been placed in place of lentils in the non-veg thali.
Onion, potato prices also goes up
In its monthly indicator, CRISIL said, "Onion and potato prices increased by 16 per cent and 9 per cent, respectively, on a monthly basis, adding further to input costs." Reports suggest that the prices of chilli and cumin have also increased. Chilli became costlier by 69 per cent and cumin by 16 per cent in July. “However, given the lesser quantity of these ingredients used in the thali, their cost contribution remains lower than that of vegetables,” Crisil said.
