In a bid to follow zero tolerance policy over banned activities on Twitter, Elon Musk's social media company X Corp (formerly Twitter) has banned a record 23.95 lakh Twitter accounts in India due to policy violations in the June-July period. X has banned most of these accounts for promoting child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity. Apart from this, 1,772 accounts have been banned for promoting terrorism in the country. Actually, all tech companies have to follow the new IT rules of 2021 of the Government of India and submit monthly reports. During June-July, the company received a total of 3,340 user complaints from India through its Grievance Address Mechanism.
X deleted 1,851,022 accounts
Between June 26 and July 25, X banned an additional 1,851,022 accounts in India. Of these, 2,865 accounts have been banned for promoting terrorism in the country. During this period, the company has received a total of 2,056 user complaints from India through its grievance address mechanism. X handled 49 complaints between June 26 and July 25, which were related to appeals against account suspensions. After review of one of these accounts, its suspension was lifted. The remaining reported accounts will remain suspended as per the decision of the company.
Abuse and harassment (1,783) accounted for the maximum number of complaints received by X from India, followed by cases of Hateful Conduct (54), Privacy Infringements (48) and Child Sexual Exploitation (46). This action and disclosure comes under the purview of the new IT rules of 2021. For which major digital and social media platforms with more than 5 million users have to issue monthly compliance reports.
