Mumbai. From Monday, UPI transactions—including money transfers, balance checks, and transaction reversals—will take between 10 and 15 seconds, down from the previous 30-second delay. Users will notice payments complete more quickly on apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, and others. While most transactions will finish in around 15 seconds, reversals and status updates should now occur within 10 seconds.
How this works
This speed boost comes from technical upgrades by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which overhauled the application programming interfaces (APIs) that connect banks with UPI apps. The main update cuts the time for verifying payee details from 15 seconds to just 10 seconds.
Quicker failure and reversal notifications
If a transaction fails or needs to be reversed, users will now receive an update within 10 seconds instead of waiting for around 30 seconds. When a payment doesn’t go through at all—due to connection issues—it will automatically be marked as failed without delay.
Faster checking of stuck transactions
Banks and UPI apps can now review pending or stuck transactions within 45–60 seconds of initiation, down from the previous 90-second wait. However, each bank or app is limited to three status checks per transaction within a two-hour window to prevent system overload.
New balance lookup limit
To ease system load and prevent excessive querying, UPI apps will now allow a maximum of 50 balance checks per user per day. Until now, this was unlimited.
Final beneficiary name only
In order to reduce mistakes and fraud, UPI apps will now display only the actual, final beneficiary’s name during a transaction. Users can no longer edit or add nicknames at the time of payment.
All banks, payment service providers, and UPI app developers are required to implement these changes by June 30.
