Mumbai. India has overtaken China to become the largest exporter of smartphones to the United States. According to research firm Canalys, 44% of smartphones imported by the US between April and June this year were made in India. In the same period last year, this number was only 13%. The share of China, on the other hand, dropped sharply from 61% to just 25% in one year.
Apple shifts big production to India

Yet, Apple continues to rely heavily on its Indian production line, which is becoming more central to its global strategy.
240% rise in India’s phone manufacturing
India’s smartphone manufacturing has seen a massive jump of 240% in just one year. This increase has played a major role in reducing China's share in the American smartphone market. Apple shuts down store in China
In another major development, Apple has decided to shut down one of its retail stores in China for the first time. Global companies shifting to India
According to Canalys analyst Sanyam Chaurasia, the global smartphone manufacturing industry is slowly moving out of China and shifting to India. Renaud Anjoran, executive at Chinese electronics firm Agilian Technology, also said that many global brands are now completing the final stages of their product assembly in India.
India-made iPhones break records
India produced 2.39 crore iPhones between January and June 2025, which is 52% more than the same period last year.
