Mumbai. Elon Musk's electric vehicle company Tesla has officially launched its first offering in the Indian market — the electric SUV Model Y. The company claims the car can travel up to 622 kilometers on a single full charge. With an advanced safety package including 8 airbags and Level-2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), the vehicle is now available for booking in India.
Two variants with premium pricing
The Model Y comes in two rear-wheel drive (RWD) variants — the standard RWD and a Long Range RWD version. The ex-showroom price of the standard RWD variant is ₹60 lakh, while the Long Range RWD model is priced at ₹68 lakh. In international markets, the Model Y is also available with an all-wheel drive (AWD) option, but that version has not been launched in India for now.
Bookings open, deliveries from October
Tesla has started accepting bookings for Model Y through its official website. Customers can reserve the car by paying a token amount of ₹22,000. The delivery of vehicles is expected to begin from October 2025. The initial rollout will focus on premium buyers seeking a high-range, globally recognized electric vehicle.
Upgraded exterior and unique lighting features
The Model Y’s updated exterior includes redesigned wheels, improved tyres, and upgraded braking systems. The suspension has been retuned for a smoother ride. It also features a single cross-car tail lamp and world’s first indirect reflective tail lights — designed for maximum visibility and aesthetic appeal.
Futuristic interiors with smart tech
The SUV’s interior offers ambient lighting, refined materials, ventilated first-row seats, and power-folding second-row seats. An 8-inch Bluetooth-compatible touchscreen is installed for rear passengers. The cabin features acoustic glass on all sides for enhanced sound insulation. Invisible speakers provide minimalist styling while ensuring powerful audio performance.
Self-driving tech coming soon to India
Tesla’s advanced self-driving technology, already operational in markets like the US, may soon be available in India. The company is working to bring future updates that will allow Model Y to drive itself across most Indian roads with minimal human intervention.
Two more autonomous vehicle projects in pipeline
Besides Model Y, Tesla is working on two more autonomous projects. The first is the ‘Cybercab’ — a compact two-seater robo-taxi revealed by Elon Musk in October during the ‘V-Robot’ event in California. The Cybercab will operate without a steering wheel or pedals and feature wireless charging. It is expected to cost under $30,000 (approx ₹25 lakh) and have a running cost of just 20 cents per mile (\~₹16 per 1.6 km).
Tesla also introduced the ‘Robovan’, another autonomous vehicle designed to transport up to 20 people along with their luggage. It is expected to serve sports teams and large group transportation. Elon Musk’s larger vision is to create a self-driving Tesla taxi fleet, where Tesla owners can list their cars as part-time taxis when not in use and earn revenue through the shared network.
