Mumbai. Air India announced on Monday that it will suspend its flight services between Delhi and Washington DC starting September 1, 2025. The airline said the decision was taken due to operational challenges, with the aim of maintaining the overall reliability and quality of its route network.

Main reason: Shortage in aircraft fleet

The suspension is mainly due to a shortage in Air India’s aircraft fleet. Last month, the airline began the retrofitting process for its 26 Boeing 787-8 aircraft to upgrade cabin interiors and passenger amenities. While this programme is intended to improve passenger experience, it will keep several aircraft unavailable until the end of 2026.

Impact of Pakistan airspace closure

In addition to the fleet shortage, the closure of Pakistan’s airspace has affected long-haul operations. As a result, flight routes have become longer, increasing operational complications and impacting scheduling. This factor has also contributed to the decision to suspend the Delhi-Washington route.

Alternative travel arrangements for passengers

Air India said passengers who have booked flights to or from Washington DC after September 1 will be contacted directly. They will be offered alternative travel options, such as rebooking on other flights or a full refund, based on their preference.

One-stop flights through US gateway cities

Even after the suspension, passengers can travel between India and Washington DC via Air India’s four US gateways: New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Chicago, and San Francisco. These one-stop connections will be operated in partnership with Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines. Passengers will be able to travel on a single ticket, with baggage checked through to their final destination.

Continued North America operations

Air India will continue to operate non-stop flights between India and six destinations in North America. This includes Toronto and Vancouver in Canada, along with four US cities. The airline remains committed to serving key long-haul markets despite the temporary suspension of the Washington DC route.
