New Delhi. IT giant Infosys has fired over 300 newly hired employees due to their failure to pass internal assessments. These employees had undergone basic training at the company’s Mysuru campus but were unable to clear the internal evaluation after three attempts. The employees in question were hired in October 2024.
The National IT Employees' Union (NITES) claims that over 300 individuals have been dismissed. According to NITES, the affected candidates had waited for two years before receiving their offer letters, with their hiring only possible after continuous efforts by the candidates and the union. The union has demanded strict action and has registered a complaint with the Ministry of Labour and Employment regarding the issue.
Infosys defended its actionse
Infosys, on the other hand, defended its actions, stating that they have a strict recruitment process in place. After undergoing basic training at the Mysuru campus, all new employees must pass an internal assessment to continue their employment. Infosys emphasized that the employees are given three opportunities to pass the assessment, as stipulated in the contract they sign when they are hired.
NITES alleged that these employees were asked to sign separation agreements upon being called to the Mysuru campus. The union accused Infosys of forcing the employees to sign the papers for their mutual separation, which they believe was done without adequate justification or fair grounds.
Internal evaluation process is critical for maintaining the quality and standards
Infosys clarified that their internal evaluation process is critical for maintaining the quality and standards of the workforce. The company highlighted that the process is transparent and offers candidates multiple chances to meet the required performance levels. The new hires were fully aware of these conditions and the possibility of termination if they failed to meet the expectations set by the evaluation process.
The company further stated that such decisions, though difficult, are taken to ensure that only those employees who meet the high standards of performance and quality are retained. This process also aims to ensure that the company’s employees are well-equipped to handle the demands of their roles and contribute effectively to its growth.
Firing of employees has sparked a debate
The firing of these employees has sparked a debate about the fairness of recruitment practices in large tech firms. NITES has vowed to continue advocating for the affected individuals and has urged the government to intervene in the matter. This incident also raises broader concerns about the challenges faced by fresh graduates in securing and maintaining jobs in competitive sectors like IT.
