Shah Rukh Khan has emerged as India's highest tax-paying celebrity, paying Rs 92 crore in taxes for the financial year 2023-24, according to Fortune India's latest list of top tax-paying Indian celebrities. The list, released on Wednesday, highlights the substantial contributions of leading stars to the national exchequer. Following Khan, Tamil cinema superstar Thalapathy Vijay secured the second spot, having paid Rs80 crore in taxes. Bollywood legends Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan also feature in the top five of the list. In the sports category, Virat Kohli leads as the highest tax-paying Indian athlete. Interestingly, actor Aamir Khan trails behind several celebs, including Kareena Kapoor, Kapil Sharma, and Pankaj Tripathi, who paid Rs11 crore, while Aamir Khan paid Rs 10 crore. Notably, Akshay Kumar, a usual contender in top tax-paying lists, has dropped out of the top 20 this year.

Shah Rukh Khan’s wealth has seen a sharp rise in 2023, with his net worth increasing by Rs1,300 crore. According to Forbes, his net worth in 2022 stood at Rs 5,116 crore, which surged by 8% following the success of blockbuster films Pathaan and Jawan. Pathaan alone grossed Rs 1,050 crore globally, and Khan’s profit-sharing agreement with Yash Raj Films allowed him to take home 60% of the film's profits, in addition to a Rs 100 crore fee. Moreover, Jawan, produced by his Red Chillies Entertainment, further boosted his income with earnings from OTT and television rights. With a net worth now standing at Rs 6,411 crore, Shah Rukh Khan is the fourth richest actor in the world, surpassing global stars like Jackie Chan (Rs 3,359 crore) and Tom Cruise (Rs 5,039 crore).
Kareena Kapoor: India’s Top Female Taxpayer
In the female category, Kareena Kapoor has taken the top spot as the highest tax-paying female celebrity in India, having paid Rs20 crore in taxes for FY 2024. This places her above Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor and South Indian star Mohanlal, both of whom paid Rs18 crore. Meanwhile, comedian Kapil Sharma ranks 11th on the list, contributing Rs26 crore. Akshay Kumar, who topped the list last year with a tax payment of Rs25 crore, is notably absent from this year's top 20. Despite this, in 2023, he received a letter of appreciation from the Income Tax Department for being the highest tax-paying celebrity in the previous year. Additionally, the Hurun India Rich List 2024 features Shah Rukh Khan with a net worth of Rs7,300 crore, debuting at the top of the list of Bollywood celebrities. Juhi Chawla ranks second with a net worth of Rs4,600 crore.
