Mumbai. Owing to several factors, the price of a vegetarian plate (thali) in India, on an annual basis, has increased by 9% to Rs 27.8 in the month of May. Last year in May 2023, the average price of veg thali was Rs 25.5 only. Crisil has released this information in its monthly indicator of food plate cost and said that the price of vegetarian thali saw an increase of 1% in May as compared to April last month. The price of veg thali was Rs 27.4 in April.
The price of tomato, potato and onion gone up
At the same time, the price of non-veg thali has fallen by 7% on an annual basis to Rs 55.9 in May. Last year in May 2023, the price of non-veg thali was Rs 59.9. According to the Crisil report, this growth in the cost of veg thali has been seen due to the increase in the prices of tomato (39%), potato (41%) and onion (46%) on an annual basis. The prices of rice (13%) and pulses (21%) have also increased on an annual basis. Crisil also said that due to the fall in the prices of cumin, chilli and vegetable oil, there was no further growth in the price of veg thali. The price of cumin has fallen by 37%, chilli by 25% and vegetable oil by 8%.
Price of chicken came down
The fall in the price of non-veg thali has been noted due to a 16% year-on-year decrease in the price of broilers i.e. chicken. Broilers account for 50% of the cost of non-veg thali. The cost of preparing a non-veg thali has decreased by 1% as compared to Rs 56.3 in April.
How the average cost of a thali is calculated
Crisil has calculated the average cost of preparing a thali at home based on the current food prices in North, South, East and West India. Monthly changes affect the expenditure of the common man. Crisil's data also reveals the ingredients including cereals, pulses, broilers (chicken), vegetables, spices, edible oil and cooking gas, which bring about a change in the price of the thali. Veg thali includes roti, vegetables (onion, tomato and potato), rice, dal, curd and salad. At the same time, chicken has been included in place of dal for non-veg thali.
