Mumbai. In a move that can provide relief to crores of mobile users, the name of the caller will also be visible when a call comes from an unknown number on the phone. Telecom companies have started the trial in Mumbai and Haryana circles. Coined as Calling Name Presentation (CNAP), this initiative will help prevent spam and fraud calls. After pressure from the government and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the companies have started this testing. In this, the name of the caller will also be visible along with the number during the incoming call. An official from TRAI, privy to the development, said that we will share the results of the testing with the Department of Telecommunications, so that a practical decision can be taken about the proposed service. The service will be somewhat like Truecaller.
Govt had asked to block fake international calls
Recently the government has directed telecom operators to block all fake international calls, which show Indian numbers when the call comes. The Department of Telecom (DOT) was receiving complaints related to this. Cyber crime and financial fraud are being done with people through these calls. Notably, spam calls or messages are calls or messages made to people from an unknown number through which people are lured into taking loans, taking credit cards, winning lottery, buying any service or goods of a company. All these calls or messages are made without your permission.
Spam calls are new weapon of cyber crime
The question arises in the minds of most people that if I have not taken any service from this company, then how did the company get my mobile number. Actually, there are some companies that sell your personal data like your mobile number or email ID, age or your hobbies to third parties. When you sign up for a service, some companies mention in their terms and conditions that they can use your data for advertising or to share it with third parties, but none of us ever bother to read those terms and conditions. Therefore, if you get a call in which the caller is asking for personal details from you by claiming to be an officer of a bank or a government agency, then disconnect the phone immediately. If you are being pressured to give out any personal information immediately over a phone call, be cautious and report to the cyber cell of the police station.
