Mumbai. Apple Inc., the world’s largest technology company and the maker of the iconic iPhone, is accelerating its business expansion in India as it gradually reduces its manufacturing footprint in China. This strategic shift is expected to create a substantial number of jobs in India, providing a significant boost to the local economy. By the end of the current financial year, Apple aims to create 2 lakh direct jobs in India, with an estimated 70% of these positions being filled by women. This development is a major boon for the Indian job market, particularly for young professionals. According to government job creation formulas, these direct jobs are expected to generate an additional 4 lakh indirect jobs, potentially bringing the total number of new jobs created by Apple in India to 6 lakh by March 2025. The Indian government's formula suggests that for every direct job created, two indirect jobs are generated in related industries. Applying this to Apple’s expansion, the creation of 2 lakh direct jobs could lead to the generation of 3 to 4 lakh additional indirect jobs, further amplifying the economic impact of Apple’s operations in the country.
Training and Production Initiatives
Apple has already begun training thousands of employees at its Tamil Nadu factory in preparation for the production of its upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models. These models, which are anticipated to be launched globally soon, mark a significant milestone in Apple’s increasing reliance on Indian manufacturing capabilities. Previously, Apple announced that it would be assembling its top-tier iPhone models in India, in collaboration with its partner, Foxconn Technology Group.
New Production Unit and Product Launch
Foxconn, Apple's primary manufacturing partner, is set to begin production of the iPhone 16 Pro at its Tamil Nadu plant shortly. Invitations for the product launch event have been sent out, and it is widely speculated that Apple will introduce four variants of the iPhone 16 on September 9. This move underscores Apple’s commitment to diversifying its production base outside of China and expanding its manufacturing operations in India. The expansion is part of the broader "Make in India" initiative, which has already attracted significant global investment and is positioning India as a key player in the global technology manufacturing sector. As Apple continues to scale up its operations in India, the country stands to gain not only in terms of job creation but also as a major hub in the global supply chain for high-end consumer electronics.
