Mumbai. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has expressed her aspiration to eliminate taxes, despite acknowledging significant challenges and financial constraints. Speaking at the 11th convocation ceremony of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Bhopal, Sitharaman addressed concerns over the high tax burden and outlined her vision for a tax-free future.
Challenges in Tax Reduction
During her speech, Sitharaman made it clear that while she aims to bring taxes down to zero, achieving this goal involves numerous hurdles. "People often question the extent of taxes, and I do not like this at all," she said. "I want to bring the tax to zero, but there are many challenges and funds are required for this." She emphasized the need for substantial financial resources to meet national and international commitments, stressing that India cannot rely on external funding and must utilize its own resources.
Emphasis on Tradition and Innovation
In her address, Sitharaman highlighted the richness of Indian tradition from Banaras to Kerala and encouraged students to contribute their knowledge to society. She praised the institute’s performance, noting that IISER Bhopal has published over 3,000 research papers and secured several patents. Sitharaman encouraged students to balance their professional lives with continued scientific exploration, emphasizing the need for research in data science and renewable energy technologies.
State Initiatives and Education Development
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav praised Sitharaman's leadership and highlighted Madhya Pradesh's unique position as the only state with three IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology). He noted the state's increasing private sector involvement in higher education and the establishment of six Global Skill Parks and a PM Excellence College. IISER's Gender Diversity
IISER Director Professor Govardhan Das reported that 37% of the institute’s student body comprises female students. He commended the institute’s progress and the significant number of research papers published. Bhopal MP Alok Sharma also addressed the ceremony, calling it a historic occasion and urging graduates to contribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of transforming India from a self-reliant nation to a developed one.
