Mumbai. Billionaire businessman Elon Musk has completely bought Twitter and has now started laying off employees across the world. Meanwhile, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has dashed off an open letter to Twitter Inc's new owner Elon Musk urging him to ensure that human rights remain a core value to Twitter's management. Twitter laid off half of its workforce on Friday, and tweets from employees of the social media company said the human rights team was also among those affected. Turk said that this is a step that cannot be called an encouraging start.
Twitter needs to understand the disadvantages
Volker Turk said in his letter that Twitter is part of a global revolution that has changed the way we communicate. But I write with concern and apprehension about our digital public square and Twitter's role in it. He said that Twitter, like all companies, needs to understand the disadvantages associated with its platform and take steps to overcome them. Social platforms must set boundaries for use and development to respect our shared human rights. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said that 'In short, I urge you to ensure that human rights are central to the management of Twitter under your leadership'.
Twitter's only focus to increase revenue
Significantly, on Friday, a massive layoff in Twitter has created uncertainty about the future of Twitter, which is owned by the world's richest man, Elon Musk. The company has had a week full of chaos after Elon Musk became the owner of Twitter. Twitter's revenue is seeing a sharp drop after Musk's dismissal of several top management, including Twitter's CEO, in a jiffy. Musk had earlier announced that it will now cost $8 for anyone owning a verification badge on the microblogging site. Since his $44bn takeover last week, Musk has dissolved the company’s board, sacked its CEO, Parag Agrawal, along with senior managers, and began mass layoffs on Friday.
