Mumbai. Have you noticed how many times a Rs 2,000 note arrives in your hand now from an ATM? If you have noticed, then you must have understood that the circulation of Rs 2,000 note has come down. According to the RBI's Annual Report, the number of Rs 2,000 banknotes has continued to decline for the last few years. By the end of March this year, their share in the total currency notes came down to 214 crores or 1.6 percent.
13,053 crores notes
Till March this year, the total number of notes of all denominations stood at 13,053 crores. Before this, in the same period a year ago, this figure was 12,437 crores. According to the report of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the number of notes in the denomination of Rs 2,000 in circulation at the end of March 2020 was 274 crore. This figure was 2.4 per cent of the total number of currency notes in circulation. After this, by March 2021, the number of 2000 notes in circulation came down to 245 crores or 2 percent. At the end of the last financial year, this figure came down to 214 crores or 1.6 per cent. These figures are in terms of quantity.
22.6 percent of the total value
If we talk in terms of value, then in March 2020, the total value of Rs 2,000 note was 22.6 percent of the total value of notes of all denominations. This figure came down to 17.3 percent in March 2021 and to 13.8 percent in March 2022.
The number of Rs 500 notes increased
According to the report, the number of Rs 500 notes increased to 4,554.68 crore at the end of March this year, from 3,867.90 crore in the same period a year ago. In terms of quantity, Rs 500 notes (34.9 per cent) were the highest in circulation. It was followed by Rs 10 notes with 21.3 per cent. According to the report, the total value of currency in circulation in all denominations increased to Rs 31.05 lakh crore in March this year from Rs 28.27 lakh crore in March 2021.
