Mumbai: Products made of single-use plastic are going to be banned from July 1. These items also include plastic straws which are used in everything from juices to packaged beverages. This has created a challenge for many companies to find an alternative to plastic straws. Many companies were opposing this initiative of the government. But now after the strict stand of the government, companies are seen standing by this decision. Single use plastic is going to be banned from Friday. Simultaneously, FMCG giant Dabur, which sells juices under the Real brand, said it is committed to complying with the norms and will ensure that all packs come with paper straws.

Amul working on biodegradable straws

At the same time, RS Sodhi, MD, GCMMF (Amul), which requires 10-12 lakh straws every day, said that despite a slight delay in shipment, the organization is ready with options. "We are currently working on manufacturing biodegradable straws, which are cheaper than paper straws," Sodhi said.

Frooti said it will have an impact on the cost

Similarly, Frooti maker Parle Agro said that its sales will not be affected by the ban on plastic straws. Shauna Chauhan, CEO, Parle Agro, said that there will be no impact on the sales, but the cost of the company will be impacted due to shipping the biodegradable straw.

Companies had given this argument

The government has ruled out delaying the ban amid vigorous lobbying by beverage companies. Demanding a stay on the ban, the companies argued that the supply of paper straws in India was short and their import at high cost would affect operations.
