Mumbai. Indian carmakers will not be required to send their cars to the Global NCAP for safety rating because India will soon have its own safety agency. Its name will be India NCAP. This agency will give 1 to 5 star rating to vehicles in the country on the basis of their performance in crash tests. For this, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has approved the draft of GSR notification to start India NCAP.

Giving this information on Friday, Gadkari said that the central government is going to bring India New Car Assessment Program (India NCAP) system. It will work as a consumer centric platform. This is where customers will get the option to choose safety cars on the basis of star-rating. Along with this, fair competition among Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) will also be encouraged for manufacturing of safe vehicles in the country.
Star rating is very important
The Union Minister said that giving star rating on the basis of crash test is very important not only to determine structural and passenger safety in cars, but also to increase export-eligibility of Indian vehicles. The testing protocol in India NCAP will be similar to the Global NCAP Crash Test Protocol. The current Indian rules will be kept in mind in the crash test. Car manufacturers will be able to test their vehicles in India's in-house testing service.
Getting more stars in rating means better safety
Technically, cars with the lowest rating or star in the NCAP test are not considered safe at the time of an accident. Tested cars are rated 0 to 5 stars. In the crash test, the car is tested on many parameters including adult safety, child safety. Dummies are used in the car test and then the impact of the crash on them is investigated.
