Mother of all IPOs to be open for retail investors from May 4 to 9

Mumbai. The Railway Board has directed all zones to do away with "unnecessary" posts. Due to the increasing use of technology, there are many posts which are no longer useful today, in view of which the Railway Board has given this direction. The board also says that today 67 percent of the total expenditure is being spent on employees, which is not going to last long. They have identified a few categories, which include assistant cooks, typists, cleaning assistants, carpenters, painters, gardeners, etc.

If need be, some work can be 'outsourced'

The board said that the employees posted in unnecessary posts will be posted at such places where people are needed. And if need be, some work can be 'outsourced'. In a letter to the General Managers of all Railway Zones, Railway Board's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairman VK Tripathi said that such posts should be identified and relocated to the concerned employees as per the requirement within a month.

Railway's 67% of the expenditure is on employees

Tripathi has written in the letter, “Human resource is very valuable for the Railways. Especially when 67% of the expenditure is on employees. Not only this, it also has a tendency to increase. It seems that this arrangement is not going to work for the organization in the long run. “It is imperative that the workforce is utilized effectively and efficiently. Use wherever necessary. In fact there is a need to rationalize workforce utilization to make the organization efficient and strong.

Workforce not being fully utilized

Tripathi has also written that if the employees are working in such categories where the workforce is not being fully utilized, then the non-essential workers should be posted where they are needed and the posts are vacant. If needed, the help of an external agency can also be taken (outsourced) for the work.
